mother and son happy about online school

Transitioning to a new school can be incredibly difficult for some children, especially when it’s mid-year and they’ve already established a base in their mind for how their year will be, what friends they have, and so on. Taking this a step further, if you’ve decided to transition your child from a brick-and-mortar school to an online school, there are going to be even more unique changes to adjust to. However, there are ways to help alleviate the stress and the frustration your child may feel (and you may also feel as a parent/guardian).

Alleviate Stress in a New School Transition

When anyone is experiencing change, the most basic but essential thing they need is the knowledge that they are supported and that they aren’t facing this change on their own. Here are a few helpful ways you can ease the transition to online school for your child and yourself as the parent or guardian.

1. Talk with Your Child About the Change

Children can have a difficult time wrapping their minds around change and dealing with the emotions change can bring. Sit your child down and ask them how they are feeling about their transition and their needs at this time. Let them know that you are there for them through the entire process, and really be there when they need you as much as you possibly can. Check in with them constantly to make sure they are handling the transition well and help them process through things when they are struggling.

Take the time to explain to your child why the transition is happening and assure them that although there will be a period of adjustment, it won’t last forever. They will have so much more flexibility to do more of the things they want to and can do schoolwork in a way that fits their needs.

2. Take Advantage of Support Services and Orientation

The enrollment process and orientation don’t need to be stressful. At ICON, we do our best to provide a seamless transition and will support you in any way we can to ensure that you and your child start strong on your online school journey. Our staff and teachers are here to support you and your child. Don’t be a stranger!

3. Be Patient with Your Child and Yourself

This is so crucial to success with any transition, as it is a process that takes time and requires determination. If things aren’t going the way you want them to, give it time, have patience with yourself and your child, and make little adjustments if needed.

Transitioning to online school may require a time of trial and error to determine what schedule and workload work for your child’s unique needs. It will take time to find your groove, so be patient and rest in the fact that many parents/guardians have been in your shoes and none of them had it go entirely as planned at first.

One of the significant aspects of ICON is that we tailor everything to your agenda and create a program around your child’s learning style and needs. So when you feel the current agenda or program just isn’t working, let us know, and we’ll help you find a solution that does work for you and your child.
