Sometimes, school struggles don't start with failing grades. They start with small changes in a student's behavior, attitude, or daily routine.
As parents and caregivers, recognizing those early signs can make a big difference!
5 EARLY SIGNS YOUR STUDENT MAY BE STRUGGLING
1. Assignments Are Starting to Pile Up
Missing work, unfinished assignments, or grades that are slipping may indicate your student is overwhelmed, confused, or having trouble keeping up.
2. They Don't Want to Talk About School
If your student becomes frustrated, shuts down, or avoids conversations about school, there may be more going on than they are ready to share.
3. Attendance Is Becoming a Challenge
Frequent absences, tardiness, or difficulty getting started each day may signal that something about school isn't working.
4. They Spend Time on School but Aren't Making Progress
Your student may be sitting at a computer or working on homework for hours without completing much. They may need help with organization, understanding assignments, or knowing where to begin.
5. Their Confidence Is Changing
Listen for statements like:
- "I'm just not good at school."
- "I'll never catch up."
- "What's the point?"
- "I don't care anymore."
Sometimes, what looks like a lack of motivation is actually frustration, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed.
SO, WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Start with a Conversation. Ask, "What's been the hardest part of school lately?" Listen without judgment.
Reach Out to the School. Talk with teachers, counselors, or advisors before missing work and frustration become bigger problems.
Break It Down. Help your student identify one manageable next step instead of focusing on everything they need to do.
Explore Other Options. If the traditional school environment isn't meeting your student's needs, consider whether a different learning setting might be a better fit.
Consider Virtual School. Online learning may provide flexibility and a different educational environment for students whose needs, schedules, or circumstances make traditional school challenging. It still requires structure, engagement, and accountability, but it may be another path worth exploring.
A REMINDER FOR PARENTS
Your student doesn't have to reach a breaking point before you consider a change.
