# Attendance and Engagement in Online School: Showing Up Matters!

Online school offers flexibility, personalized learning, and the opportunity to build a schedule that works for your life. But just like a traditional school, success in a virtual classroom starts with two important things: **attendance and engagement.**

At ICON Virtual School, we understand that every student has different responsibilities, learning needs, and goals. Some students may be balancing work, family responsibilities, health challenges, or other life circumstances while working toward graduation. That is one reason online learning can be such a valuable option!

But flexibility doesn't mean you can put school on the back burner. Consistent participation helps students stay connected, keep up with coursework, and make steady progress toward graduation.

## What Does Attendance Look Like in an Online School?

In a traditional classroom, attendance often means being physically present in a classroom. In an online school, attendance can look a little different.

Students demonstrate participation through their instructional activities, coursework, assignments, teacher interactions, and other documented learning activities. Learning may happen through the online platform, a live class, one-on-one support, or approved offline activities.

## Engagement Is More Than Turning In Assignments

Engagement means taking an active role in your education. It includes completing assignments, communicating with teachers, asking questions, working toward mastery, and reaching out when something gets difficult.

Here are five ways to stay engaged in online school:

**1. Create a consistent schedule.**

One of the biggest benefits of online school is flexibility. You may be able to complete your work in the morning, afternoon, or evening, depending on your program's requirements. Find a routine that works for you and make school a regular part of your day.

**2. Set weekly goals.**

Start each week by looking at your assignments, identifying what needs to be completed, and making a realistic plan. Breaking larger tasks into smaller steps makes it easier to stay on track.

**3. Check your progress regularly.**

Don't wait until the end of the term to find out you're behind. Check your coursework, review missing assignments, and monitor your progress. If your school offers a parent or student portal, use it to help you stay informed.

**4. Communicate with your teachers.**

You don't have to figure everything out on your own! If you don't understand an assignment, are struggling with a concept, or are having trouble keeping up, reach out to your teacher or advisor. Asking for help is a sign that you're taking responsibility for your education.

**5. Keep showing up—even when it's hard.**

Some weeks will be easier than others. You might feel motivated and get ahead, while other weeks may feel overwhelming. The important thing is to recognize when you're struggling and take the next step. A difficult day doesn't have to turn into a difficult month.
